Basketball Recap: Nylah Mcshan's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Steubenville over University

Steubenville lost a heartbreaker to University when they met back in January of 2023, and they left with a heavy heart again on Thursday. The Steubenville Big Red came up short against the University Hawks, falling 68-43. While losing is never fun, the Big Red can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 97th in Ohio, while the Hawks are ranked ninth in West Virginia).

Steubenville's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nylah McShan, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. McShan's evening made it 15 games in a row in which she has scored at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Phynyx Fleming, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 15 boards.

Even though they lost, Steubenville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in December of 2023.

University's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bri Fox, who went 6 of 15 en route to 16 points and three steals. Fox has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last three times she's played. Hannah Stemple was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Steubenville's defeat dropped their record down to 12-6. As for University, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-5.

Steubenville has already played their next matchup, a 44-41 win against Wheeling Park on the 3rd. As for University, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 62-45 loss against Morgantown on the 3rd.
