Basketball Recap: Monument Valley Mustangs vs. Holbrook Roadrunners

Monument Valley lost against Holbrook back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Monument Valley Mustangs received a blow as they fell 54-39 to the Holbrook Roadrunners. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 245th, while the Roadrunners are ranked 114th).

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Latrell Begay, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards. That's the most rebounds Begay has posted since back in November of 2024. Ralph Gray III was another key player, putting up 13 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Monument Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Holbrook only pulled down four offensive rebounds.

Holbrook's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jaron Becenti, who went 6 of 9 en route to 16 points. Becenti's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Tapaha, who posted seven points in addition to eight assists and five rebounds.

This is the second loss in a row for Monument Valley and nudges their season record down to 8-13. As for Holbrook, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-6 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monument Valley will host Tuba City at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Tuba City is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.4 points per game this season. As for Holbrook, they will square off against Alchesay at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Alchesay will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Holbrook surely won't give up without a fight.
