Softball Game Preview: Clayton Comets vs. South Johnston Trojans

The Clayton Comets will challenge the South Johnston Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Clayton took a nine-run defeat the last time they faced off against Garner, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Clayton came out on top in a nail-biter against Garner on Tuesday, sneaking past 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Comets have posted since April 30, 2024.

Meanwhile, South Johnston had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Golden Falcons as they made off with a 13-3 win. Considering the Trojans have won five contests by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

South Johnston pushed their record up to 6-1 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Clayton, the win made it two in a row for them and also bumps their season record up to 6-1.

Clayton beat South Johnston 10-7 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Does Clayton have another victory up their sleeve, or will South Johnston turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
