Baseball Game Preview: George County Rebels vs. Sumrall Bobcats

The George County Rebels will take on the Sumrall Bobcats at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

George County took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Germantown 12-11. The win was some much needed relief for the Rebels as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

The team relied heavily on Blane Green, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Cayler Havard, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.

George County hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are 2-1 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Sumrall made easy work of Wayne County on Tuesday and carried off a 14-4 victory. The Bobcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by six runs or more this season.

Drew Davis was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Sumrall is undefeated when Davis posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Tucker Barrett, who scored three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

George County pushed their record up to 5-5 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Sumrall, their victory bumped their record up to 8-4.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. George County has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sumrall struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
