Baseball Recap: Hempfield Area Triumphs

After having lost a blowout in their previous game, Hempfield Area was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils, sneaking past 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Spartans have posted since May 2, 2024.

Josh Cayer tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over 6.2 innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Hempfield Area is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-6 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Hempfield Area's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Chase Sikorski, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Sikorski also hit a double, marking his first of the season. Another was Evan Dunlap, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Hempfield Area's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-6. As for Mt. Lebanon, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 3-7.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hempfield Area will square off against Butler at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans are facing the Golden Tornado at the right time seeing as the Golden Tornado are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Mt. Lebanon, they will face off against Canon-McMillan at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The Blue Devils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Big Macs have averaged an impressive 8.3 runs per game this season.
