Softball Recap: Newport Comes Up Short

Newport was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They came up short against the Rivercrest Colts, falling 15-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Colts this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-0 two weeks ago.

Newport saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lexi Hembrey, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base was Hembrey's first of the season. Another was Sophie Haigwood, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.

Newport's defeat dropped their record down to 1-11. As for Rivercrest, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-6 record this season.

Newport will take on White County Central at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bears have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.62 runs per game on average), something the Greyhounds will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Rivercrest, they will square off against Hoxie at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Mustangs will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Colts surely won't give up without a fight.
