Mendon Unity and Camp Point Central are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Mendon Unity is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous four meetings between Mendon Unity and Liberty, and Liberty kept the tradition alive. The Mustangs took a 12-9 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles on Wednesday.
Mendon Unity saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Avery Frese, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and one triple. That triple marked the first that Frese has hit this season. Another was Asher Gray, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, Camp Point Central waltzed into their matchup on Thursday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 11-10 W against the Chargers. While the Panthers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-21), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Luke Huston and Wes Homan did most of the damage at the plate: Huston got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI, while Homan got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Caleb Petersen was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles.
Mendon Unity's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-3. As for Camp Point Central, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mendon Unity has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Camp Point Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Mendon Unity got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in May of 2025 against Camp Point Central by a conclusive 13-1 score. Will the Mustangs repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
