Basketball Recap: Mesquite Comes Up Short

If Mesquite was riding high fresh off their 104-76 takedown of Marcos de Niza last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Wildcats were beaten by the St. Mary's Knights 83-52 on Wednesday. The Wildcats were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 51-21.

When it comes to explaining why Mesquite lost, don't look at Crew Jorde. Despite the final result, he shot 50% from the field on his way to 27 points. Jorde is becoming a predictor of the Wildcats' success: when he posts at least 20 points the team is 2-1 (and 6-8 when he doesn't). Donovan Richard was another key player, putting up six points.

Mesquite dropped their record down to 8-9 with the defeat, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for St. Mary's, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 12-4.

Mesquite wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 64-56 loss against Flagstaff on the 16th. As for St. Mary's, they have also already played their next contest, an 86-58 victory against Marcos de Niza on the 16th.
