The Wellington Wolverines will square off against the Doral Academy Firebirds at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wellington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Wellington's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They came out on top against South Fork by a score of 5-0.
Erryn Lowe was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Gabi De Los Reyes also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Doral Academy faced Coral Reef in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Firebirds were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Barracudas. The Firebirds might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 16 contests by six runs or more this season.
Meagan Villazon was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other pitching news, Doral Academy got a great performance from Camila Diaz as she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over 4.1 innings pitched. Diaz has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Sarah Breaux, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Zoey Abdullah, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Doral Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Coral Reef only posted a batting average of .143.
Doral Academy's victory was their 21st straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 20-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 9.7 runs this season. As for Wellington, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Wellington hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Doral Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Wellington came up short against Doral Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, falling 5-1. Can the Wolverines avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
