Football Recap: Elizabethton Wins Going Away Against Cherokee

Elizabethton not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since October 18, 2024 (when they won 42-0). They put the hurt on the Cherokee Chiefs with a sharp 30-7 victory. The win continues a trend for the Fighting Cyclones in their matchups with the Chiefs: they've now won five in a row.

Cj Mathes had a dynamite game, rushing for 78 yards, while also throwing for 131 yards and one touchdown while completing 71.4% of his passes. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making three total tackles.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Elizabethton, adding 12 points to the final score. All those points came courtesy of William Bowers: he added nine points with three field goals and another three kicking extra points.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Elizabethton's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Mathes, Samuel Orsburn, and Justius Wallin, who each picked up one sack apiece.

Elizabethton's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Cherokee, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 4-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Elizabethton will welcome Northview Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Cherokee, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Seymour at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Chiefs will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 29.8 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
