Basketball Recap: St. Patrick's Comes Up Short

St. Patrick played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by the Elm Creek Buffaloes and fell 55-24. While losing is never fun, the Irish can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 186th, while the Buffaloes are ranked 17th).

St. Patrick's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cara Roberg, who posted 11 points and five rebounds.

Elm Creek was led to victory by Ashley Bauer and Kendal Cavenee. Bauer went 5 of 10 on her way to 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals, while Cavenee went 6 of 10 en route to 15 points. Cavenee is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 12 games she's played dating back to last season. Ava Hellriegel was another key player, putting up ten points.

St. Patrick's dropped their record down to 2-8 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Elm Creek, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Patrick's will take on Perkins County on Friday. As for Elm Creek, they will square off against Loomis at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Elm Creek is facing Loomis at the right time seeing as Loomis is stuck on an eight-game losing streak.
