Vela waltzed into their contest on Friday with 12 straight wins... but they left with 13. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the McAllen Bulldogs, sneaking past 47-44. Given the Sabercats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 166th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 384th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Jordan Bustamante, who went 9 for 16 en route to 24 points in addition to eight boards and five steals. Jp Olivarez also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

McAllen lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being D'Aundre Canada, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Judah Rios, who went 5 for 12 en route to 12 points.

Vela is on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 18 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 29-4 record this season. As for McAllen, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 22-9.

Vela didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-45 victory against Sharyland on the 28th. McAllen has also already played their next contest (against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
