Basketball Recap: Oakcrest Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Mary Mehan and Kate Newsome

After flying high against Evergreen Christian two weeks ago, Oakcrest came back down to earth. The Oakcrest Chargers took a 45-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Trinity Christian Gryphons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Gryphons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 47-40 back in January.

Oakcrest's loss on Tuesday came despite strong showings from Kate Newsome and Mary Mehan. Newsome posted 23 points and five rebounds, while Mehan put up six points in addition to 17 boards and three blocks. That was a full 59% of Oakcrest's points, marking the sixth time in a row Newsome has earned more than a third of the team's points.

Even though they lost, Oakcrest smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive matches.

Oakcrest's defeat dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Trinity Christian, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-7.

Oakcrest wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 57-39 loss against Seton on the 20th. As for Trinity Christian, they have also already played their next contest, a 52-45 win against Fredericksburg Christian on the 21st.
