Basketball Recap: Millwood Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Griffin Aktalay and Hazeem Karim

If Millwood was feeling good fresh off their 66-42 takedown of Buford Road Christian Academy on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Bobcats fell 38-34 to the Amelia Academy Patriots on Friday. The Bobcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2016.

Despite the loss, Millwood had strong showings from Hazeem Karim, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, and Griffin Aktalay, who posted 14 points along with eight boards and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of James McRae, who earned four points and eight boards.

Amelia Academy found their leader in freshman Shayne Jackson, who put up 15 points. Jackson's big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Abdoul Tahirou, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds.

Millwood's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Amelia Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 3-0.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Millwood will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Williamsburg Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on December 2. As for Amelia Academy, they will head out to challenge Steward at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
