Softball Game Preview: Hawkins Hawks vs. Cumby Trojans

The Hawkins Hawks will head out to challenge the Cumby Trojans at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hawkins will be strutting in after a win while Cumby will be coming in after a loss.

Hawkins took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over Alba-Golden.

Kalyn Ellison spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Karsyn Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Londyn Wilson, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Hawkins was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are undefeated (3-0) when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Cumby was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They came up short against Como-Pickton, falling 20-3.

Ella Horne was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

Hawkins is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-8-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. Cumby's loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
