Basketball Recap: Calvert Falls Despite Big Games from Amani Welch and Brooke Kidwell

Calvert was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They fell 35-28 to the Great Mills Hornets. The Cavaliers lost against the Hornets in their previous head to head back in January of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 56-27 score last time.

Calvert's loss came despite strong showings from Brooke Kidwell and Amani Welch. Kidwell dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Welch posted 12 points in addition to six steals and five boards. That was a full 53.6% of Calvert's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Great Mills' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but ABRIL ESPARZA led the charge by going 5 of 10 en route to 11 points along with seven rebounds and four blocks. ESPARZA has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was JALIYAH BROWN, who put up eight points in addition to five boards and five steals.

Calvert's loss dropped their record down to 3-11. As for Great Mills, their win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-5.

Calvert will square off against Westlake at 6:30 p.m. on January 31st. Great Mills has already played their next game (against McDonough), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
