Basketball Recap: Hector Gomez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Calexico over Palm Desert

Calexico has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 58-54 heartbreaker at the hands of the Palm Desert Aztecs. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bulldogs of the 58-47 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Calexico lost on Saturday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Hector Gomez, who posted 16 points and five rebounds. Edgar Mendoza was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Palm Desert got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jecorey Jones out in front who went 7 of 11 on his way to 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Paul Dreisbach, who had 12 points along with eight boards and three steals.

Calexico's loss dropped their record down to 12-5. As for Palm Desert, their win was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Calexico will square off against Calipatria at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Palm Desert, they will take on Shadow Hills at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Palm Desert is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.4 points per game this season.
