New Cowboys Stadium to Host Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series on Labor Day

Eight teams from three states to participate in event.

DALLAS – The new Dallas Cowboys Stadium will play host to high school football for the first time when the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series presented by Burger King takes the field with four consecutive games on Monday, Sept. 7. All four games will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.

For the third consecutive year, Chicago-based sports marketing company Intersport has partnered with ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit and the National Football Foundation to stage the elite series of games.  The Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series presented by Burger King pits high school teams from the state of Texas against prep football powerhouses from across the nation. The 2009 event features six teams from the state of Texas and two nationally-ranked teams from California and Utah.

 

“We are excited to bring the 2009 Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series presented by Burger King to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium,” Herbstreit said. “The event will now feature the nation’s best high school football teams playing in the nation’s best venue.  The opportunity to play high school football in the start-of-the-art facility that is Dallas Cowboys Stadium will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of the student athletes involved."

 

The 2009 Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series presented by Burger King will kick off at 10:30 a.m. on Labor Day with a matchup between 2008 Utah state runner-up Bingham (Utah) High School versus Euless Trinity (Texas) High School. The opener will be followed by two intrastate rivalries with Colleyville Heritage (Texas) High School versus Irving MacArthur (Texas) High School and Mansfield Timberview (Texas) High School versus Mansfield Summit (Texas) High School. The final game brings in Notre Dame (Calif.) High School to face off against Klein Oak (Texas) High School out of Houston. 

 

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at Ticketweb.com or through participating high schools.  Adult tickets are on sale for $15. Student tickets are on sale for $10. One ticket is good for all four games.

 

The Burger King Corp. is in its third consecutive year as title sponsor of the event which also features four games in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 30. Nike is also returning as the exclusive athletic apparel and equipment sponsor of the series.  MaxPreps.com and the National Football Foundation are also strategic partners of the event.

More than 50,000 fans attended the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series presented by Burger King in 2008.  Last year’s games were held at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio; Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio; and Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.
