Central Catholic (Modesto) has long been known as a California small-school power.

The Raiders won back-to-back small-school state bowl titles in 2012 and 2013 in 2015 they won the small-school Open Division when the playoffs were expanded to 13 divisions.

Central Catholic has rose up the Sac-Joaquin Section ranks, all the way to Division II, the section's second highest division. Following decisive wins over Stagg (65-18) and Rocklin (42-18), the Raiders have not only moved into the semifinals to face a very focused Del Oro (Loomis) squad, but they now have more power points than anyone in the bracket.

That means it moves into the MaxPreps Regional Bowl Game Projections this week, supplanting top seed Granite Bay, which has also looked dominant.

As it stands now, Central Catholic would be in the 1-AA regional game and face Central (Fresno).

Central Catholic is one of six teams to move into the projections this week. We've simply advanced the teams in each of the 52 brackets played throughout 10 sections, then placed them into the 26 regional games which is based solely on competitive equity.

Of course, the 10 CIF commissioners will make the final call after all the section title games are complete on Dec. 2. Announcements of the games will be Dec. 3 and the games begin Dec. 8-9.

We have made one exception to these strict power ratings and advanced De La Salle (Concord) from Northern California over Folsom in the Open Division game which pits the top teams from the North and South. Whoever those selections are will not play a regional game, but instead advance directly to the state title game.

The other new teams to enter the fray this week are Southern California schools El Modena (4-AA), Culver City (5-AA), Central Valley Christian (5-AA) and Caruthers (6-AA). The other Northern California school to enter the projections is another Modesto school, Modesto Christian in 6-AA.
