Basketball Game Preview: El Capitan Vaqueros vs. Monte Vista Monarchs

El Capitan hasn't had much luck against Monte Vista recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The El Capitan Vaqueros will be playing in front of their home fans against the Monte Vista Monarchs at 6:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

El Capitan is coming into the match on the come-up as their season has now been buoyed by two straight wins. They managed a 69-64 victory over Santana on Saturday.

It was another big night for Jason Wilson, who went 7 for 13 from beyond the arc on his way to 31 points and five rebounds. That's the most points he has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kale Curo, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 12 points and six rebounds.

Meanwhile, Monte Vista had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.3 points) and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 66-49 win over the Foothillers. Given the Monarchs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 556th, while the Foothillers are ranked 1174th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Monte Vista has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.1 points per game. As for El Capitan, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-13.

Things could have been worse for El Capitan, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 72-58 loss to Monte Vista in their previous matchup back in February of 2024.
