Newport and Halifax are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Buffaloes will host the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Newport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Newport got the win against East Juniata by a conclusive 16-4. The Buffaloes haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
Aden Banks made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that he snagged this season.
In other batting news, Jameson Cummins was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Landon Cigic was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Halifax came tearing into Friday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Indians.
Halifax got a massive performance out of Will Steinhauer, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Steinhauer a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Josh Zahurak, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run.
Halifax pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for Newport, their win bumped their record up to 5-2.
Newport suffered a grim 14-1 defeat to Halifax in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Buffaloes avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
