Softball Recap: Carbondale Area Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Carbondale Area ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over the Honesdale Hornets. This was payback for the Chargers, who suffered a 7-1 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Alyssa Lewis spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up ten Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Aurora Esgro, who scored two runs while going 3-for-5. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Olivia Ellinger, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Esgro wasn't the only one making solid contact: Carbondale Area kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Carbondale Area's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Honesdale, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Looking ahead, Carbondale Area will host Blue Ridge at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Honesdale, they will square off against Western Wayne at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.67 runs per game on average), something the Hornets will no doubt try to take advantage of.
