Football Recap: Desert Sunrise Comes Up Short at Home Against Mesquite

Desert Sunrise unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They were dealt a 54-0 defeat at the hands of the Mesquite Wildcats on Thursday. If the Golden Hawks were looking for revenge after losing 62-0 to the Wildcats when the teams met back in August of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Mesquite found their leader in freshman Alexa Montoya, who threw for 182 yards and four TDs on only 11 passes, and also rushed for 37 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kylie Clinton also helped out with an impressive 124 receiving yards.

Mesquite has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Desert Sunrise is headed away from home for the first time to take on Tempe at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mesquite, they will head out to challenge Skyline at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
