Basketball Game Preview: Pomona Red Devils vs. Baldwin Park Braves

The Pomona Red Devils will venture away from home to take on the Baldwin Park Braves at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Pomona comes in still looking for their first win of the season.

Pomona is headed into the game out to prove that what happened against Monrovia on Wednesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Red Devils were beaten by the Wildcats 67-22. While losing is never fun, the Red Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1046th, while the Wildcats are ranked 349th).

Despite the loss, Pomona saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Destin Tilman almost dropped a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. With that strong performance, Tilman is now averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game.

Meanwhile, Baldwin Park's contest on Friday was close up to the half, but then they kicked things up a notch. Everything went their way against El Monte as they made off with a 53-33 win. The Braves have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Baldwin Park is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.9 points over those games. As for Pomona, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

Pomona couldn't quite finish off Baldwin Park in their previous meeting back in December of 2021 and fell 48-45. Thankfully for the Red Devils, Nathan Serrano (who shot 47% from the field to rack up 23 points and five boards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
