Recap: South Mecklenburg Sabres vs. Charlotte Catholic Cougars
After flying high against the Berry Cardinal on Tuesday, the South Mecklenburg Sabres came back down to earth. The game between South Mecklenburg and Charlotte Catholic wasn't particularly close, with South Mecklenburg falling 55-39. While losing is never fun, South Mecklenburg can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while Charlotte Catholic is ranked fourth).
Despite the loss, South Mecklenburg still got an impressive performance from Makailah Davis, who scored 12 points along with four steals. Davis has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of KB Brown, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Charlotte Catholic's win on Wednesday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Blanca Thomas, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 19 rebounds. Thomas is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted three or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Gracynn Gough, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds.
South Mecklenburg's loss dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Charlotte Catholic, they pushed their record up to 17-3 with that victory, which was their ninth straight on the road.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Mecklenburg will take on Palisades at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully South Mecklenburg focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Wednesday. As for Charlotte Catholic, they will head out on the road to square off against Rocky River at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Charlotte Catholic is facing Rocky River at the right time seeing as Rocky River is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
