Basketball Recap: Lytle Takes a Loss

Lytle was the 56-47 winner over Crystal City when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The matchup between the Lytle Pirates and the Crystal City Javelinas didn't end well, with the Lytle Pirates falling 50-33. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1283rd, while the Javelinas are ranked 634th).

When it comes to explaining why Lytle lost on Friday, don't look at Arianna Garcia. Despite the final result, she went 5 for 8 on her way to 10 points in addition to five rebounds and three blocks. Garcia is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lunna Reyes, who posted three points and ten boards.

Even though they lost, Lytle smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

Izabela Tapia had an outrageously good game for Crystal City as she dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 boards. The dominant performance also gave Tapia a new career-high in steals (eight). Another player making a difference was Vianey Garcia, who had eight points in addition to six rebounds and four steals.

Lytle dropped their record down to 7-14 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Crystal City, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 11-8 record this season.

Lytle wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 41-27 defeat against Natalia on the 7th. As for Crystal City, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 52-48 victory against Hondo on the 7th.
