Baseball Game Preview: Sumter Gamecocks vs. Cheraw Braves

The Sumter Gamecocks will take on the Cheraw Braves at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Sumter has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Cheraw will arrive with nine straight victories.

Sumter's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Saturday's struggle, when Hartsville hitters got past them. The Gamecocks lost 13-7 to the Red Foxes on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Cheraw narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past York Prep 6-4.

Anthony Strong was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Will Quick was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Brayden Michael, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.

Cheraw's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Sumter, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
