League recap: Heartland moves into state Top 25

D1 District 5 (8 Man) recap October 8, 2013

Heartland was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating Franklin. The Huskies came in at 19 in the state poll after placing at number 28 last week.

Heartland extended the longest winning streak in D1 District 5 (8 Man) this week by beating the Flyers, 62-36. The win marks fifth in a row for the Erik Wetjen's team.

McCool Junction's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Damon Kaliff threw for 83 and 3 touchdowns and Alex Preslicka had 78 yards receiving. On the ground Chance Chrisman contributed 112 yards. Auston Calvert helped McCool Junction's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 12 yards.

Raphael Guerrero made the biggest impact on defense this week as Harvard lost to the Mustangs. The 5-foot-7 senior nabbed 1 interception.

He was 6-11 with 2 interceptions.

Chrisman was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 112 yards on 17 carries as McCool Junction topped the Cardinals. Teammate Kaliff added to the ground attack by rushing for 88 yards.

Jarrod Weiss/Jerad Niederklein's team's Kaliff and Preslicka led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 5-9 quarterback Kaliff has thrown for 627 yards this season, while Preslicka has 22 catches for 500 yards. Tyler Brown from the Huskies leads the league in rushing with 744 yards.

The most important game in D1 District 5 (8 Man) this week will be the match up between Heartland and the Mustangs. The Huskies enters the contest ranked 19th in the state, while McCool Junction ranks 12th.

Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Mustangs' Preslicka goes up against Heartland's Brown.

Next week's game between McCool Junction and the Huskies will feature an aerial matchup as Kaliff tests his arm against Brown's defensive ability.

The league will see a high scoring game when Heartland and the Mustangs face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Huskies comes in having scored 250 this season, while McCool Junction has scored 219. Heartland scored 62 points last week as it beat Franklin.

The Mustangs took down Harvard 62-26 last week, the largest margin of any game. Kaliff ran for 88 yards during the win.
