League recap: Sweetwater stuns Monahans in upset

3A Region I District 4 recap November 5, 2013

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Sweetwater, who defeated 175th ranked Monahans, 28-9.

The Mustangs moved up to 390 from 515 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 3A Region I District 4. Sweetwater climbed the ranks as a result of beating the Loboes 28-9.

Big Spring's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Tobyn Tannehill threw for 184 and 3 touchdowns and Tate Kennedy had 96 yards receiving. On the ground Tannehill chipped in 156 yards. Devin Roberson helped Big Spring's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 64 yards.

He went 10-20 with 1 interception.

Tannehill was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 156 yards on 14 carries as the Steers defeated Greenwood. Teammate Preston Alexander added to the ground attack by rushing for 89 yards.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Big Spring's Tannehill and Roberson have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Tannehill has thrown for 1,744 yards this season, while Roberson has 41 catches for 807 yards. Snyder's D'vincent Allison leads the league in rushing yards with 1,530.

Two of the top teams in 3A Region I District 4 will go toe-to-toe this week when Phillip Ritchey's team takes on Monahans. The Steers' offense has recorded 396 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Mickey Owens' team has permitted only 171 on the year.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Big Spring takes on the Loboes. The Steers are currently in first, while Monahans is in third.

The Rangers lost to Big Spring 54-22 last week, the largest margin of any game. Dustin Rea was a bright spot for Greenwood, as he ran for 142 yards and caught 3 passes for 21 yards in the defeat.
