Bishop Gorman prepares to host a special TOC 2016-17 ceremony where the football team will be nationally recognized by MaxPreps

MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) Gaels have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 12th year honoring football.

This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Gaels ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!

Well, I think it's even safe to proclaim that Bishop Gorman is ahead of 100 percent of their opponents. The Gaels have become one of the most dominant teams in the history of high school football, winning their eighth consecutive state championship. Their latest opponent in the NIAA Class 4A state championship was Liberty (Henderson, NV), and the game was out of reach early as the Gaels took a 35-0 lead into the second quarter.

Winning has become quite the norm for Head Coach Kenny Sanchez, who has not lost a game (30-0) since taking over for his brother Tony in 2015. The Gaels outscored their opponents an eye-opening 794-130, including five shutouts. Gorman did not shut out Liberty in the championship game, but did put together a score that most at MaxPreps thought was entered incorrectly (84-8).

Their unequivocal supremacy in high school football has earned them a No.1 ranking in the state of Nevada, No.1 in MaxPreps National Rankings and if there was a World Ranking they would be at the top there too. Bishop Gorman has taken over the high school football landscape and it will be fascinating to see how long they can stay at the top.

In order to be eligible for this honor, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Liberty 84-8 on Dec. 3 marked the completion of an incredible 15-0 season — and earned Bishop Gorman an invitation to the Tour of Champions.

Please join us as we celebrate with the football team, coaching staff, students and fans on Feb. 10 at 1:05 p.m. in the Gym.
