Basketball Recap: Chaputnguak Comes Up Short at Home Against Nelson Island

Chaputnguak unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They were just a bucket shy of victory on Wednesday and fell 45-44 to the Nelson Island Islanders. The Shaman were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Islanders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Chaputnguak lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being MacKenzie Larsen, who posted 11 points. Another player making a difference was Maisha Erik, who put up ten points.

Nelson Island's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Rosie Carl, who had 11 points. Carl continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mary Pitka, who earned nine points.

The victory was the third in a row for Nelson Island, bringing their record for this year to 3-1.

Chaputnguak didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-14 win against Nuniwarmiut on the 24th. Nelson Island has also already played their next match, a 40-0 victory against Akiuk Memorial on the 24th.
