Softball Recap: Trinity Lutheran Comes Up Short

Trinity Lutheran was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of the Madison Cubs. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cubs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Grace Lance put in work no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

Lance wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Clark Branum, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. Branum is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Mina Croquart also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Trinity Lutheran's defeat dropped their record down to 1-10. As for Madison, they now have a winning record of 9-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Trinity Lutheran will square off against Scottsburg at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.82 runs per game on average), something the Cougars will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Madison, they will face off against Floyd Central at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Highlanders will roll in looking for their tenth straight victory, something the Cubs surely won't give up without a fight.
