Texas high school football: Dawson Pendergrass tops state rushing yardage leaderboard

Senior running back has strung together 14 straight 100-yard rushing performances

Dawson Pendergrass of Mineola is Texas high school football's leader in rushing yardage with 2,797 yards, according to statistics submitted to MaxPreps. The 6-foot-3, 207-pound senior reached 300 yards rushing four times during his team's 5-5 regular season.

Pendergrass, who has been held under 200 yards rushing just twice this fall, ran for a season-high 481 yards and five touchdowns in a 51-36 win over Rains in late October. He ran 290 times this fall and scored 34 rushing touchdowns while bringing his career total to 7,027 yards.

Elijah Huff of West Oso (Corpus Christi) sits 378 yards behind Pendergrass in the No. 2 spot after carrying 279 times for 2,419 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2022. The 5-11, 160-pound senior reached 200 yards rushing six times this fall and owns a 14-game streak in which he has rushed for at least 100 yards dating back to October 2021.

Huff ran for a season-high 407 yards and five touchdowns on 35 carries during an 81-57 win over Robstown in mid-October. Murry Moore of Dunbar (Fort Worth) sits third with 2,206 yards and 19 scores in 2022.
