Baseball Recap: King's Snaps Five-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

King dropped their record down to 9-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins on the road. They fell just short of the University Prep Pumas by a score of 10-9. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Knights, who until this matchup were averaging 4.07 runs allowed.

Luke Echelbarger put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. King's is 5-1 when Echelbarger posts two or more runs, but 4-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, Brandon McCann was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Nathaniel Bemis also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

As for University Prep, they pushed their record up to 7-4 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.

On University Prep's side, Teddy Bergstrom and Grady Stone did most of the damage at the plate: Bergstrom got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run, while Stone got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave Bergstrom a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jasper Schmidt, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Coincidentally, King's and University Prep will both be playing Roosevelt the next time they take the field. The Knights will head out to face the Roughriders at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Pumas will play them later in the day, at 5:00 p.m.
