Great Lakes Region Round Up

Who hit it big the last two weeks in the Great Lakes Region? Try Kyle Coffin.

Paced by a 25-point first quarter, the Newark Valley (Newark Valley, N.Y.) senior dropped a school-record 55 points in an 84-82 win over Dryden (Dryden, N.Y.). Coffin hit five first-quarter 3-pointers (ended with eight totel) and was 9-of-10 at the free throw line. He had 35 points at half.

Coffin's tally was eight points shy of the Section 4 boys record according to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association website. The Section 4 record of 63 points was set by Charles Rolles of Binghamton Central during the 1952-53 season.

Earlier this season Coffin scored 40 points in a loss to Waverly (Waverly, N.Y.).

Big Win: Prattsburgh Central (Prattsburgh, N.Y.) junior Mason Putnam set a record for the most points scored against a Naples (Naples, N.Y.) team with 46 in a meeting on unbeaten teams. Prattsburgh, which won 78-53, also got a triple-double from sophomore James Crowder (11 points, 19 rebounds and 12 assists).

Chairmen of the Board: Kasiem Andrews from Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech (Philadelphia, Pa.) ripped done a region-best 35 rebounds – including a staggering 18 of offense – in a loss to Audenried (Philadelphia, Pa.). He’s averaging 15.6 rebounds per game.

Block Party: Six players in the region have had double-digit blocked shots in a single game since the New Year led by Union City (Union City, Pa.) junior Bronnan Higley who blocked a 14 shots in a win over Cambridge Springs (Cambridge Springs, Pa.).

Passing Fancy: Of the four players in the region to have 13 or more assists over the last two weeks, three reside in Indiana. Lafayette Central Catholic (Lafayette, Ind.) junior Carson Barrett logged 16 assists in a win over Rensselaer Central (Rensselaer, Ind.), while Southwestern (Hanover, Ind.) sophomore Foster Mefford and Lawrence Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) senior Jacob Laravia each had 13 assists in wins over Trimble County (Bedford, Ky.) and Park Tudor (Indianapolis, Ind.), respectively. Rome Free Academy (Rome, N.Y.) sophomore Jeremiah Bartholomew had 13 assists in a win over Central Valley Academy (Ilion, N.Y.).
