Basketball Recap: Vanguard Academy Beethoven Takes a Loss

Vanguard Academy Beethoven has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were beaten by the Wimberley Texans 80-36 on Friday. While losing is never fun, Vanguard Academy Beethoven can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1140th, while Wimberley is ranked 229th).

Wimberley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Paul Gumbert-Mendoza, who went 6 for 9 on his way to 14 points in addition to five assists and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Reece Wortham, who made all 5 shots he took to post 12 points and three steals.

Vanguard Academy Beethoven's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Wimberley, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-5.

Vanguard Academy Beethoven will square off against IDEA College Prep at 7:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025. IDEA College Prep has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Wimberley, they and Medina Valley will face off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. One thing working in Wimberley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six games.
