Preview: Southmoreland Scotties vs. Deer Lakes Lancers
The Southmoreland Scotties will head out on the road to face off against the Deer Lakes Lancers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
After only seven points in their last contest, Southmoreland made sure to put some points up on the board against Mt. Pleasant on Friday. Southmoreland claimed a resounding 40-3 win over Mt. Pleasant on the road. Southmoreland pushed the score to 34-3 by the end of the third, a deficit Mt. Pleasant had no chance of recovering from.
Dasjon Craggette went supernova for Southmoreland, rushing for 335 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 16.8 yards per carry. Craggette really tore up the turf during one magnificent 92-yard run.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the matchup if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Deer Lakes' strategy against Freeport on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Deer Lakes blew Freeport out of the water with a 35-0 final score. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Deer Lakes.
Deer Lakes got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Derek Burk out in front who threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes. Zier Williams also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Their wins bumped Southmoreland to 6-4 and Deer Lakes to 7-3.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Southmoreland has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 147.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Deer Lakes struggles in that department as they've been even better at 166.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Southmoreland ended up a good deal behind Deer Lakes in their previous meeting back in September, losing 24-7. Can Southmoreland avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
