Recap: Doral Academy Firebirds vs. Western Wildcats
The Doral Academy Firebirds had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 85-82 win over Western on Monday. Winning may never get old, but Doral Academy sure is getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Doral Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Stephanie Vega, who scored 31 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Vega has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Angelina Deleon, who scored 19 points along with eight rebounds.
Western lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Laurie Severe, who scored 26 points along with five rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Tamara Elliott, who scored 19 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Western smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Doral Academy only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Doral Academy is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 22-7 record this season. As for Western, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-8.
Doral Academy will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Boca Raton at 7:00 p.m. on February 22nd. Doral Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matches -- so hopefully Boca Raton likes a good challenge. Western does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
