Rekiyah Washington commands the offense for Blue Waves win

Recap: Port Gibson Blue Waves vs. Franklin County Bulldogs

Even though the Port Gibson Blue Waves have not done well against the Franklin County Bulldogs recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Port Gibson narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Franklin County 27-24. Given Port Gibson's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 118th, while Franklin County is ranked 248th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Port Gibson's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rekiyah Washington led the charge by scoring eight points along with ten rebounds. Washington has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last four times she's played. Camara Evans was another key contributor, scoring five points.

Port Gibson is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season. As for Franklin County, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-18.

Port Gibson won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against South Pike at 7:30 p.m. on February 9th. South Pike is coming into the matchup with five straight victories on the road, meaning Port Gibson will have to defend against a squad hungry for a win. Franklin County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
