Preview: Cannon Cougars vs. Providence Day Chargers
Cannon is on a 17-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Providence Day is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Cannon Cougars will take on the Providence Day Chargers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
In what's become a running theme this season, Cannon gave their fans yet another huge win on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Charlotte Christian 74-22 on the road. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 47-13.
Cannon got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Maya Mccorkle out in front who scored 20 points along with nine rebounds and five assists. Brooke Busby was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with four steals.
Meanwhile, Providence Day didn't have too much trouble with Victory Christian Center at home on Tuesday as they won 43-27. The team accrued 32 points in the first half and coasted on those for the victory.
Jaida Mcclure was her usual excellent self, scoring 18 points along with five assists and five rebounds. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophie Levine, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Cannon's victory bumped their record up to 12-7. As for Providence Day, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Cannon have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 33.9 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Providence Day, though, as they've been averaging only 26.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Cannon took their victory against Providence Day when the teams last played back in February of 2023 by a conclusive 68-46. Will Cannon repeat their success, or does Providence Day have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
