Softball Recap: Martins Ferry Picks Up Second Consecutive Win

Martins Ferry won against Claymont on Wednesday with five runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Purple Riders beat the Mustangs by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 5-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 5-4 on Wednesday.

Maddie Lucas was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off eight hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Lucas wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Giana Chirpas, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

The win made it two in a row for Martins Ferry and bumps their season record up to 24-4. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for Claymont, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 15-11.

Looking ahead, Martins Ferry will take on West Muskingum at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Purple Riders' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tornadoes have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season. Claymont does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
