Basketball Recap: Speedway Takes a Loss

Speedway saw some tournament action on Tuesday. They were beaten by the Franklin Central Flashes 68-32. While losing is never fun, the Sparkplugs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 217th, while the Flashes are ranked 23rd).

Despite the loss, Speedway saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Madelynn Matelic posted 13 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. Matelic has been hot, having posted three or more steals the last eight times she's played. Another player making a difference was Hayli Clampitt, who earned six points.

Aniya Doughty was nothing short of spectacular for Franklin Central: she went 7-for-8 to rack up 17 points. What's more, Doughty also posted a 75% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's achieved since back in January. Ashlee Baker was another key player, putting up 12 points and four steals.

Speedway now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Franklin Central, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Speedway will take on Monrovia at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Franklin Central, they will square off against Roncalli at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
