Baseball Game Preview: Legion Collegiate Academy Lancers vs. Varsity Opponent

The Legion Collegiate Academy Lancers will challenge Varsity Opponent on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Legion Collegiate Academy has six straight wins, Varsity Opponent has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Legion Collegiate Academy had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt Cherryville on Tuesday. The Lancers put the hurt on the Ironmen with a sharp 9-1 victory. Considering the Lancers have won nine matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Legion Collegiate Academy got a great performance from Charlie Bailey as he pitched 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, Bailey posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

At the plate, Griffin McKain was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Matthew Pond, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one double.

Legion Collegiate Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cherryville only posted an OBP of .259.

Meanwhile, Varsity Opponent didn't have quite enough to beat Delavan on Saturday and fell 6-4.

Legion Collegiate Academy pushed their record up to 17-8 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Varsity Opponent, their defeat dropped their record down to 72-207-2.

Legion Collegiate Academy might still be hurting after the 9-0 loss they got from Varsity Opponent when the teams last played on April 4th. Can the Lancers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
