Softball Recap: Salem Now 16-2 over Last 18 Games

Salem's game on Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Mattoon Greenwave with a sharp 9-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won 11 matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Breanna Thurman made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Thurman was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.

In other pitching news, Reagan SHuler tossed a big game, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Marah Johnson, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Mya Russell was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Salem has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 16 of their last 18 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Mattoon, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-16.

Coming up, Salem will take on Charleston at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mattoon, they will face off against Centralia at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
