Baseball Preview: Matanzas Pirates vs. Mainland Buccaneers
Matanzas is 10-0 against Mainland since April of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Matanzas Pirates will look to defend their home field against the Mainland Buccaneers at 6:00 p.m.
Last Wednesday, it was a hard-fought match, but Matanzas had to settle for a 6-5 defeat against Vanguard. Matanzas has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Matanzas got a good showing from Reggie Bass, who tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
On the hitting side, Matanzas saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan DiGuglielmo, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Cope, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Mainland scored the most runs they've had all season to find success on Thursday. Everything went their way against Crescent City as Mainland made off with a 12-2 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for Mainland.
Eric Bell made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Bell was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Mateo Bond was excellent, scoring a run and stealing three bases while going 1-for-2. Another player making a difference was Jaydon Murphy, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Matanzas' loss dropped their record down to 9-13. As for Mainland, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-10.
