Baseball Recap: Newaygo Lions vs. Whitehall Vikings
Newaygo had lost three straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 12-9 to make it four. They fell 6-2 to the Whitehall Vikings. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-1 on Monday.
As for Whitehall, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 14-15. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games.
For Whitehall's part, Myles Welch spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on eight hits. Welch is becoming a predictor of the Vikings' success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 2-1 (and 12-14 when he doesn't).
At the plate, Nate Betz was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Noah Morse, who went 1-for-2 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
