Baseball Recap: Bellarmine College Prep Comes Up Short

Bellarmine College Prep extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 11-11 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of the St. Ignatius College Preparatory Wildcats. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Apolo Lapiz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Bellarmine College Prep saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Evan Tavarez, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

As for St. Ignatius College Preparatory, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 13-7-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.7 runs over those games.

On St. Ignatius College Preparatory's side, they got a great performance from Chase Gordon as he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ryan Rosenthal, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and one double. Steele Labagh also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Bellarmine College Prep is set to face off against their familiar foe Archbishop Riordan at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, St. Ignatius College Preparatory will take on rival Valley Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Wildcats have won three straight at home, while the Warriors won five straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
