Softball Recap: Ponaganset Gets the Win

Johnston typically has all the answers at home, but on Friday Ponaganset proved too difficult a challenge. They had just enough and edged out the Panthers 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Chieftains have posted since May 3, 2025.

Mattea Mello spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, Ella McKenney was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Selah Mychael, who went 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Ponaganset's record is now 5-10. As for Johnston, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 12-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Ponaganset will venture away from home to face off against North Providence at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Johnston, they will head out to take on East Greenwich at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Avengers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed seven runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
