Lindsey Owens did what her coach thought she would ... lead.

And that she did, as the 6-foot-1 outside hitter for unbeaten and MaxPreps No. 1-ranked Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.) led the Hornets to the Florida 4A state championship and an unbeaten 32-0 record.

For her efforts, Owens is honored as the MaxPreps Medium Schools National Player of the Year.

Owens, who will play next for Virginia Tech, showed how dominant she had been all season in the semifinals of the Florida state tournament when she registered 37 kills in a 3-2 win over Ransom (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11).

In the title match 3-0 sweep over defending state champion Berkeley Prep (Tampa), Owens totaled 14 kills. For the season, she totaled 469 kills (48 percent hitting percentage), 41 aces (91 percent serving percentage), 297 digs, 50 assists and 25 blocks.

Bishop Moore coach Tanya Jarvis said Owens is the team leader.

"She's just such a dynamic physical leader for us out on the court. Everyone notices her hitting, but her passing is also the best on the team as well. I think what people don't realize is that her most important thing on this team – above her offense, her passing and her serving – is that she doesn't stop. It's the same tempo in practice and matches and it's contagious to the entire team."

As a junior in 2011, Owens led her team to a 32-2 record with nearly identical statistics and was named Central Florida's Most Outstanding Player. She was recently named Florida's 4A Player of the Year, the overall Player of the Year and a finalist for Florida's Miss Volleyball honor.

Other nominees for Player of the Year included: Eve Davis of Charlotte Latin (N.C.), Makayla Lindburg of Crook County (Prineville, Ore.), Katherine Carlson of Notre Dame Prep ( Pontiac, Mich.) and Tatiana Durr of Cathedral Catholic (San Diego).

Bishop Moore is also our Medium Schools Team of the Year, as it was the second Florida high school volleyball team to go unbeaten. The Hornets won 86 of their 97 games this season.

Jarvis is the Coach of the Year as she guided Bishop Moore to the mythical national title.

All total, the Hornets played 16 schools from larger divisions and only six of their 2012 opponents had losing records, whereas more than half of their foes won 20 or more games.

It was Jarvis' first state title as a coach, but she had two as a player - at Bishop Moore.
