Softball Game Preview: Somers Spartans vs. Ellington Knights

The Somers Spartans will head out on the road to square off against the Ellington Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Wednesday, Somers beat Northwestern Regional 8-3. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Spartans.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Ellington nor Coventry/Windham RVT/Bolton/Lyman Memorial made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Knights didn't even let the Patriots on the board, marking the Knights' second-straight 2-0 shutout. Give the Knights' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's sixth straight shutout.

Camryn Fisher made a big impact no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 18 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two hits any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April.

Fisher wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Tyla Gambacorta, who went 1-for-3 with one double.

Ellington pushed their record up to 15-2 with the victory, which was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 9.4 runs this season. As for Somers, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.

Somers might still be hurting after the 15-3 loss they got from Ellington in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
